When You Cross the Finish Line – Joe Paterno

This is not a blog about Joe Paterno; this is a blog about a scary observation. As for Paterno, who knows if he will be remembered for what he did, or for what he didn’t do. Time will determine that story and it’s for others to debate.

I’ve read about people that spend all their years working towards retirement and then, when that day finally arrives, not long after they die. Sounds morbid but true. They had no plan (no next race) and all of a sudden there is nothing but time on their hands, and no clue what to do with it or how to deal with it. Their body was in motion and then suddenly became a body at rest. The result, Six Feet Under.

Today is confirmation, a real prime example of how this happens. Joe Paterno just three months ago was going full speed ahead as the legendary Penn State football coach at 85 years old. Then the Penn State scandal hit and he was fired. His whole life went from 100 MPH to 0 in a matter of minutes. Everything he knew, all gone. 85 years old and now nothing but time, and probably no idea how to deal with it. Cancer, which could have been there already but hiding, took over. Paterno also fell and broke a hip. Once a man making history, as of today is now history.

This should be a wake up call for all of us, young and old. It is important to not look at the finish line as your end game, but have a plan for your next race once you do cross that line. All runners know the run does not stop at the finish line, and if they do stop, they are not a real runner. There is always another race, another challenge. Stay active with exercise, keep your mind fresh with exciting goals and don’t get caught up in your daily routine until you’re retired, fired or laid-off and then try to figure out what to do. Take control of your time or time will take control of you. A body (and mind) in motion will stay in motion, and a body at rest will stay at rest, sometimes permanently.

Live life to its fullest and enjoy!
