As a Runner, the Fire Within Sparks a True Burning Desire!

Do you have the "Fire Within?"

Last Tuesday I was watching The Biggest Loser with my wife, not to be misinterpreted that my wife was watching me thinking I was the biggest loser.  This show motivates me, not only due to the physical transformations which happens right before our very eyes, but also the mental transformations.  Seeing people that were overweight, depressed and had no hope in life slowly start to gain belief and confidence in themselves, and completely changing as a person is so inspirational.  This show reveals that, with the help of others, a “Fire Within” can be created, which in turn ignites a burning desire to change as a person.

I’m fortunate I’ve never been severely overweight, nor had life threatening health issues.  However, I’ll be honest, I can recall only a few times during my life that I had a true internal burning desire.  Like most of us, I’ve had the “Fire Within” many times, only for it to be doused.  Burning desire is a very hard feeling to come by but is the most powerful, positive, internal-motivating feeling you may ever have in your life.  If you read enough positive-thinking books, burning desire has a common theme which is, if you have a true burning desire there is nothing or nobody that can stop you from reaching your goal.

My first feeling of real burning desire was when I was five years old and figured out how to work an 8MM movie projector.  This was actually the first thought in my life that I remember, and probably because it had such an impact on me.  I mention this story in the first chapter of my upcoming book, “One Foot in Front of the Other ” which you can download free  just for signing up on my list at my website.

Another time was when I quit my job at as a manager and DJ at a roller skating rink, and became a Cable TV door-to-door sales person.  I sold more cable subscriptions than anyone else in my company.  I had a true burning desire to be the best, to be on top, and man I was driven.  That “Fire Within” sparked a burning desire at that point of my life which led the way for a successful 30-year career in the Cable TV Industry.  It was as if I was possessed!

Above all however, the main spark that ignited the “Fire Within” and a true burning desire in me was running.  Certainly not immediately, but shortly after crossing the finish line of my first marathon.  That experience was so overwhelming, so life-changing, that the burning desire while running became stronger and stronger as time went on.  So much so, that when I run a marathon, half-marathon or 10K to this day, I can actually dig deep and call upon that “Fire Within” to create the burning desire that allows my mind to get me through the race, regardless of how my body is holding up (or not!).

Just as on The Biggest Loser, I’ve personally seen so many times people show up for their first run with our running group completely out of shape, looking around like a deer in the headlights–only to gain confidence and belief in themselves, and increase their mileage, endurance and speed week-after-week.  They gain new friendships and acquire a true purpose in life.  It’s such a wonderful transformation to witness and only confirms to me that running is so much more than putting “One Foot in Front of the Other!”

If you are reading this, have you ever had a burning desire?  Do you still get the fire within?  I hope you do because it will keep you going! Comment or share your story!

I think lots of people get the burning desire. So often in fact that maybe it’s hard to commit or focus on just one. For me at least, I find it hard to follow through and be the best at just one burning desire. And yes, it’s different for everyone, so my interpretation is probably different than anyone reading this. I guess my only real input here is; find a passion for your own reasons and stick with it. On a longer timeline it will pay its dividends. Thanks for the great read.
